What the catalogue counts

Novel

A separately published book-length work of fiction. Series numbers apply only where the work belongs to a recognised sequence.

Story collection

A volume containing several shorter works. It is one catalogue item, not one “novel”, and its component stories are not double-counted.

Short book

A separately issued novella-length or short Diamond Brothers case. These sit in reading order but are labelled separately from novels.

Short story / novella

Short fiction separately published in an ebook, newspaper serial or single-volume format. The original venue is recorded and the work is not called a novel.

Retelling collection

A volume of myths or legends retold by Horowitz. It is included as a book but not presented as an original novel.

Television tie-in

A separately published adaptation or continuation connected to a television property. The page names that relationship rather than implying a wholly original series.

Omnibus

A repackage of works already represented on the shelves. Omnibuses are not counted again unless a future editions section specifically catalogues them.

Graphic adaptation

An illustrated adaptation is a distinct publication, not another prose novel. It receives its own entry, credits where source-linked, and an adaptation-series reading position.

Companion title

A guide, activity book or other related publication. Companions are kept outside the main novel sequence and must be explicitly labelled.

Screenplay collection / edited anthology

A published book of dramatic writing, or a collection selected by Horowitz rather than wholly written by him. Editorial responsibility is stated plainly.

Contributor anthology

A multi-author collection containing Horowitz material. The site identifies his role and notes exclusive material only when publisher or contents-page evidence supports it.

Genre and readership labels

Genre labels are concise discovery aids, not claims that a book fits only one category. Readership uses publisher guidance where available and otherwise broad catalogue groupings such as adult, older children, young teens or general readers. They are recommendations rather than reading tests: interest, confidence and sensitivity vary from reader to reader.

How facts and fandom are separated

Book modals label publisher- or author-derived material as a factual, spoiler-light summary. My reactions are labelled My fan take. A source link sits with the relevant entry, so neither enthusiasm nor inference masquerades as a bibliographic fact.

Publication years mean the earliest source-linked publication of the work, not the date of the currently linked edition. Where accessible primary catalogues disagree or do not expose the original entry, the site keeps the title but flags the year for further archival checking instead of pretending certainty.

Spoilers, quotations and rights

Summaries stop at the premise. Commentary avoids solutions, culprit identities and late-book reversals. Quotations are used only when attributed and necessary; unattributed promotional-sounding copy is presented as fan commentary, not as a review quotation. Cover art and author photographs are not reproduced unless an appropriate licence or permission is established.

Omnibuses, companions and graphic adaptations are listed separately so they remain discoverable without inflating the prose-work count. Audio availability review

Regional audio availability is volatile, so it is never treated as a permanent fact. The editor checks Audible UK product and series entries, notes the ASIN, narrator, running time, release date and verification date, and rechecks any link reported as broken. A changed narrator, ASIN, abridgement status or territory creates a new edition note rather than silently overwriting history.

This is an editorial review protocol, not an automated monitor. Listen buttons appear only for recordings whose exact UK Audible entry passes the metadata gate; incomplete and unavailable listings remain hidden and are reported as range gaps.

Physical-book partner

Bookshop.org UK ↗ is the preferred future partner for new hard copies. Its stated purpose is to support independent bookshops, and its official author guidance supports ISBN-specific links.

Hardback and paperback will be shown as separate format choices only after each exact UK ISBN is source-linked. Retail availability is changeable, so each live button will identify its destination. Buying controls stay physically and verbally separate from reviews and fan recommendations.
